SUR assisted Chief Officer to get USD40,000

Seafarers' Union of Russia assisted the Chief Officer to receive his salary for five months - USD40,000 he had earned while working on board MV Hadi 41.

In this March, the seafarer came to SUR and told that he had not been paid any money since October 2023. The company has not paid him even after he signed off from the vessel.

As it became known, MV Hadi 41 (flag of Bahrain), owned by Hadi H Al Hammam, was chartered by Aramco, but upon the termination of cooperation, Hadi H Al Hammam began to experience financial difficulties - the company faced bankruptcy. The situation with the payment of money to the Chief Officer was further complicated by the fact that the flag state of Bahrain had not ratified the Maritime Labor Convention 2006, which means that it was impossible to apply instruments to control the enforcement of the shipowner's obligations. In addition, MV Hadi 41 was not covered by any collective agreement.

However, despite the difficulties, SUR, its colleagues from the Arab world, the insurance company and the Chief Officer coordinated their actions and succeed in forcing the shipowner to repay the debt to the Russian seafarer.

SUR reminds: a collective agreement is the most reliable protection not only on the voyage, but also on shore. This is also evidenced by the situations seafarers face after signing off from the vessel.
