The Seafarers' Union of Russia assisted a crew member of the MV Kallos (Panama-flagged) to receive his wages in the amount of USD37,000.
The Russian seafarer contacted SUR when the vessel was heading to the port of Ust-Luga. He explained that he had been working under a contract since September and from those time on he had not received wages. At the time, the seafarer was owed wages for 4 months. The company don't answer his letters regarding the debt. Besides, his contract was expiring, and the seafarer wanted to settle the issue before being signed off from the vessel.
SUR notified the shipping company that if it failed to fulfill its obligations to the seafarer to pay wages, they would have to seek help from the Ust-Luga Port Sate Control authorities, the next port of call of the tanker Kallos. It is only then the company transferred the salary to the Russian seafarer. Having received the money, he signed off from the vessel at once.
He thanked SUR for the assistance in addressing his problem.
