Widow received indemnification for her husband's death
The Seafarers' Union of Russia assisted the seafarer's widow to obtain indemnification for the death of her husband and reimbursement of funeral expenses from a foreign shipowner. All the abovementioned was due to the woman under the terms of the collective agreement, but the company did not transfer the money on time.
A 58-year-old Russian officer deceased on board the m/v Blue Tune in Romania in January 2023. After transporting the body to his homeland, the shipowner stopped communicating with the widow. Her independent attempts to contact the company failed. So she turned to the Union for help.
SUR contacted a lawyer from England specializing in maritime law. Since the initiated negotiations with the shipowner were unsuccessful, the lawyer took the English court a demand to detain the m/v Blue Tune upon the vessel's call at any port in the country.
Thanks to the efforts made, the company nonetheless paid the widow $121,000, an amount that included funeral expenses and indemnification for the death of her husband.
