The trade union’s maritime newspaper "Morskaya Gazeta" celebrates its 30th anniversary

This August the "Morskaya Gazeta" issued by the Southern Territorial Organization of the Seafarers’ Union of  Russia (STO SUR) celebrates a great anniversary: 30 years have passed since the first issue had been published. During this time the design of the newspaper, its technical implementation have  been advanced several times, but the focus has remained unchanged - about seafarers and for seafarers.

The decision to establish our own information bulletin which would tell about labor rights of seafarers and trade union’s activity was made back in 1992. A little later the corporate website www.stosur.ru was created, and then we got social media accounts. Since February 2022  we have stopped to maintain our accounts in some social media prohibited by Russian law, but  the STO SUR is still represented on  Yandex.Zen (Morskaya Gazeta.23).

For 30 years the newspaper published a lot of interviews with seafarers, cadets, experts, SUR employees, heads of crewing agencies, representatives of the port authorities and educational institutions. Each person we were talking to  is a whole encyclopedia of professional expertise based on colossal experience and a unique vision of the industry and also is  a symbiosis of sparkling humor and amusing stories about life at sea.

– We can work as efficiently as we can but if we do not cover this in our media the seafarers will not know about the benefits of the union in their lives. It is necessary to maintain  our own newspapers, magazines, websites and social networks, - Nikolay Popov, Chairman of the Local Trade Union Organization of the NOVOSHIP UK Shipping Company, SUR  said.
