Cadets should already know about the trade union during the training period

Igor Pavlov, Deputy Chairman of the Seafarers Union of Russia, is convinced of this.

A lecture for third-year cadets of the Faculty of Navigation about the activity of the Seafarers Union of Russia was held at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping. Assistance in organizing the event was provided by Elena Aleksandrovna Lavrentieva, Head of the Department of Organizational and Economic Support for the Activities of Transport Organizations of the University. She gives a course of lectures for cadets on the Maritime Labor Convention and kindly agreed to provide an opportunity to talk about the role of trade unions in the preparation, adoption and implementation of the provisions of the MLC.

The lecture lasted an hour, for each of the groups as part of a course of lectures on MLC. Deputy Chairman of the Seafarers Union of Russia, Igor Pavlov, in turn, said that the initiators of the creation and adoption of the MLC, which is also called the Bill of Rights of Seafarers, were maritime trade unions represented by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF).

«Therefore, it is useful for cadets to learn about how the work on the convention was carried out and by what means and methods trade unions protect the interests of seafarers», - he added.

In addition, an agreement was reached with the Dean of the Faculty of Navigation and Communications, Alexander Mikhailovich Boyarinov, to hold a meeting with 5th-year cadets who will start working on ships after graduation. It will focus on where and under what conditions graduates will have to work, what collective agreements the trade union concludes and how it helps seafarers.

«Cadets, who are in training, should know what the trade union does, how it helps seafarers, and graduates should know what collective agreements the trade union enters into, how to join it and get help in necessary cases. Similar lectures within the framework are planned for cadets of other faculties»,- Igor Pavlov said.
