The Russian and Swedish seafarers' unions continue negotiations with the owner of the vessel Swe-Freighter on the payment of compensation for disability to a former crewmember. The process is complicated by the fact that the serious health problem that the Russian got on board is not an insured event. However, there is hope of receiving at least a partial payment for disability.
So, in May 2021, the Ch. Mate had a stroke and he was being treated and undergoing rehabilitation after that. However, he could not recover from the consequences of an acute violation of the blood supply to the brain. Since the Swe-Freighter is covered by the ITF collective agreement, the relatives of the seafarer applied for the Seafarers Union of Russia for help. To date, the seafarer has been paid a sick leave and expenses related to treatment in the amount of more than 4,000 Euros.
As for disability, according to the terms of the collective agreement, stroke is considered a disease, not an injury, therefore it is not an insured event and compensation in this case is not provided for the employee. Nevertheless, the Russian and Swedish seafarers' unions insist on paying the former crewmember of the Swe-Freighter, so negotiations within the framework of social partnership continue.
