Friendship of Peoples within the SUR

The Southern Territorial Organization of the Seafarers Union of Russia continues its program of support for seafarers who are unable to join the vessels due to quarantine restrictions. This time, a member of the Seafarers ' Union of Russia, Syrian Ibrahim Ammar, asked for help due to a long stay on the shore. In 2020, he graduated from the State Maritime University named after Adm. F. F. Ushakov, at a time when strict quarantine restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic were in effect around the world. «When I received the working certificates, I got into a conversation with a colleague. I saw his SUR card and asked what kind of organization it was, how it helps seafarers. I realized that this is a protection in case of problems during the voyage so I decided to join the union»,- Ibrahim shared.

Today he speaks a fairly fluent Russian. However, recalling the first years of life in Russia, he notes that vercoming the language barrier was probably the most difficult. «I studied Russian for 9 months in Krasnodar before to enter the State Maritime University. At first it was very difficult, especially with the understanding of maritime terms. But I knew what I wanted and why I had come. Novorossiysk Maritime University provides an excellent education, which is valued in the world. My friend with a diploma of the University went to Germany, confirmed his qualifications and works in a good company»,-mentioned Ibrahim.

After graduating from the university, Ibrahim Ammar remained in Russia, received a residence permit and now tries to immerse himself in the Russian reality. «I was told that the members of the union can attend the gym for free, it's very cool and it gives a opportunity for additional communication», - says the seafarer. Recall that at the end of May last year, the Southern Territorial Organization of the Seafarers Union of Russia decided to financially support the seafarers who could not join the vessels under the quarantine restrictions.

The program has become one of the most popular among the members of the trade union and is still in effect. Within its framework, more than 160 Novorossiysk citizens received material support.
