Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many seafarers are forced to stay on board the vessels longer than the contract period, so in order to get support from the union they join it in advance. Recently, a young 3rd Engineer Alexander became a member of the primary trade union organization of the Seafarers Union of Russia in Sevastopol. According to Artem Boev, Chairman of the PPO SUR, during the pandemic, interest in the trade union has grown significantly. On the one hand, seafarers want to get the job, but they worry that at the end of the voyage they will not be able to return home in time due to problems with rotation. In this regard, the lion's share of appeals to the trade union committee concerns issues of repatriation.
So, Alexander decided to become a union member upon the recommendation of a friend who is also a seafarer and is not the first year a member of the SUR. «For our part, we told him about the advantages of employment on vessels where the collective agreement of the SUR is in force, discussed the pros and cons of working on board the vessel flying the Russian and convenient flags. In addition, the seafarers was assured that he will be able to count on the full support of the SUR, as it is possible only if he is a member of the organization, part of it, and not just know about its existence», - added Artem Boev.
