The Sevastopol Primary Trade Union Organization of the Seafarers' Union of Russia has assisted seafarers in returning $300,000, said Artyom Boyev, the chairman of the Sevastopol Primary Organization in his year-end speech.
“The amount of crew requests doesn't down. Their appeals often concern wage arrears or payment delays and also repatriation and compensation.” told Artyom Boyev. “We examined each case but our Primary Organization sometimes had no opportunity to deal with them and then we turned for assistance to the ITF inspectors in Russia or the SUR's International Department and its Headquarters. With their support we were able to resolve the most conflict situations in seafarers' favour”.
Both Russian and foreign crews addressed to the Sevastopol Primary Trade Union Organization (SPTUO). The union helped to repatriate seafarers from two different vessels and in each case there were Indians.
The organization pays attention to youth. During the meetings in Kerch State Marine Technological University and in the Marine Institute of Sevastopol State University the cadets have been told about the union activities and where they can ask for help in case of violation of their rights and how the SUR can assist them. Artyom Boyev as a member of the ETF Youth Committee is familiar with the above issue.
“For me the main part of the work is an ability to communicate with my foreign colleagues, to know about their live and problems they met,” said Boyev. “We have opportunity to share experience, provide recommendations and to discuss the most attractive factors for youth”.
One of the key priorities of the SUR is an interaction with young people because the present cadets are the sailors in future and the prospects of the union and the shipping industry depend on them. “It is hoped that the union would be getting younger and among us would be people who clearly recognize the profession they chose and ready to overcome difficulties.” Artyom Boyev points out. “I wish a happy New Year 2018 and Merry Christmas to all present and future seafarers. I would like to wish them a job stability, respectable salaries, calm sea, be in a good health and good luck!”
