Occupational safety on ships and in ports was discussed at the Central Marine Research & Design Institute
The Industry Center for Occupational Safety in Maritime Transport of the Central Marine Research & Design Institute hosted the annual industry seminar for occupational safety specialists from Russian shipping and stevedores companies on November 7-8, 2024. The representatives of the Central Marine Research & Design Institute, the Russian Chamber of Shipping, the National Agency for Qualification Development, Rostrud, the Admiral Makarov State Maritime University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, the Seafarers' Union of Russia (SUR) and the Dockers' Union of Russia (DUR) took part in the event.
It's worth noting that over the past 2-3 years a number of documents have been adopted in Russia, regulating the occupational safety of maritime industry workers, including seafarers. The fact is that the amendments to Section X of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation entailed a large-scale transformation in regulatory documents.
For example, from September 1, 2022, the new Procedure for Occupational Health and Safety Training and Testing of Occupational Health and Safety Requirements and the Regulation on the Peculiarities of Investigating Industrial Accidents in Certain Industries and Organizations have been in effect.
- My colleagues and I met to discuss the regulations that have come into force governing the safe work of crews and to consolidate all the knowledge we have today, - the SUR Chief Technical Labor Inspector Evgeny Khizhnyak noted.
He told the audience about the efforts of technical labor inspectors of the Seafarers' Union of Russia on public monitoring of the working and living conditions of seafarers – SUR members. For his part, he also shared the trade union's experience in the field of protecting the interests of injured seafarers in view of the peculiarities of accident investigation.
