"All aboard: the destination is a fair transport!"

Under this slogan the sixth Congress of the European Transport Workers' Federation begins in Budapest (Hungary). Delegates representing more than 5 million people from 200 transport unions in 38 countries of the European Union, the European Economic Area, Central and Eastern Europe will come together to discuss how to address the challenges facing  the transport sector and ensure a fair future for civil aviation, fisheries, inland waterways, logistics, shipping, ports, railways, tourism, road and public transport. The interests of the Russian seafarers are represented by a delegation of the Seafarers' Union of Russia, headed by its Chairman Yury Sukhorukov.

The congress has a busy program. Though the official  opening day of the congress is today, some important events within its framework took place on the 23th of May.
So, yesterday a conference of the EFT Youth Committee was held. The main outcome of the meeting was the election of representatives of various trade unions who will work hand in hand in the EFT Youth Committee over the next five years. As noted, the vote was stormy, but fair. Thus, Celine Ruffy from France and Robin Varzsak from Belgium were elected  co–chairs of the Ñommittee, and Ante Choric from Croatia and Kaan Gundesh from Turkey became its main members. Lara Santamaria Garcia from Spain was elected as a representative of women on the  EFT Youth Committee.

Later in the evening, a demonstration was held in solidarity with employees of the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air. This action was aimed at making  it clear to the carrier that the trade unions would continue to fight the anti–union policy Wizz Air had been pursuing for many years. This is about a complete lack of respect for employees and illegal dismissals in EU countries. Yesterday, members of the EFA civil aviation  trade unions unanimously condemned the company's  employment policy.
The women's conference of the EFT under the slogan "More women in the transport sector" and the grand opening of the congress are scheduled for today.

Tomorrow the delegates will listen to reports, discuss the work of the federation and vote to elect the President and Secretary General of the EFT. Frank Morils and Livia Spera were nominated for these positions respectively.  The Thursday’s agenda includes work on resolutions and amendments proposed to the ETF Charter  and a political debate "The future, transport, job in the sector". The EFT and its member organizations will share their vision and solutions concerning the issues affecting the transport sector.
