The crew of "Global Dream" have expressed a wish to work under collective agreement
“Even if there are certificates of insurance on board, and they meet the
requirements of the MLC, it is not always possible to find out the amount which
seafarers can anticipate”, - Nikolay Sukhanov, the Chairman of the Far
Eastern Territorial Organization of the Seafarers Union of Russia (SUR FETO)
said. So, while visiting the M/V "Global Dream" (flag of Panama, IMO
9146716), it has been found out that the crew
know nothing about the insurance policy, although the necessary
documents are in place.
“Just recently, at the 35th Asia-Pacific Maritime Unions Summit, the
participants from around the world highlighted
the need to tighten port control over
execution of the amendments to the convention and to verify more
thoroughly the authenticity of insurance certificates. In addition, it is
necessary to raise the awareness of seamen about the requirements of the
convention, so that they know their rights and be able to assess the working
conditions on board the vessel, " -
Nikolay Sukhanov said.
For the rest, there are no special complaints from the crew towards the
shipowner - company "Worldway Marine Panama Corp": the salary
for AB seaman is $1200, for
Master -$7500.
By the way, there was not a
collective agreement signed by a trade union on board, but only this document can guarantee the observance of labor and
social rights of seamen, especially those working on ships flying a flag of
convenience.
“An unforeseen situation can occur at any time and even a seemingly
reliable shipowner will stop to fulfill its obligations. With that in mind, the
crew have asked our Union to send a note to the shipowner stating the need to
negotiate a contract at the next port of
call in India. Previously the vessel was covered by a collective agreement, but
it expired”, - Nikolay Sukhanov said.
